Some people may perceive sustainability as doing good while ignoring profit.
However, in terms of sustainability—particularly sustainability in business management—profit is an essential requirement for any company. At this point, let me introduce the concept of the Triple Bottom Line.
The Triple Bottom Line is a framework proposed by John Elkington, a pioneer in CSR, which highlights the three essential pillars of corporate management: Profit, People, and Planet. As you can see, “Profit” refers to earnings, without which a company cannot survive. At the same time, it emphasizes that business should not be driven by profit alone, but must also take into account the people involved in its activities and the impact of its operations on the environment.
From the perspective of a company’s purpose and reason for existence, it can be said that such a balanced approach to management is indispensable.
